Mission, Vision & Values

Mission

NEC exists to support a just transition from an extractive to a regenerative economy by building the scale and power of the solidarity economy movement in Black, Indigenous, and working class communities in every region of the United States.

North Star

New Economy Coalition is guided by the leadership of communities who have always built solidarity economies from a place of vision, creativity, and survival. We are guided by Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and working class communities. We are guided by women, queer and trans people. Because we know that we will all be free when all of these communities have self-determination and community control of land, labor, and livelihoods.

Vision

We envision a world where our lives are no longer dominated or determined by capitalism nor any other extractive system. We envision a world in which everyone has what they need, where people have collective agency and self-determination. In our vision, global economic transformation is built and led by regional solidarity economy ecosystems.

Values

To bring to life to the our vision of regional solidarity ecosystems, our process and practices must:

  1. Be rooted in history, culture, and tradition

  2. Embody a culture of reparations and restoration to self, each other, and the earth

  3. Practice responsive, participatory governance

  4. Follow the leadership of communities that have been most harmed by our current economic system, defined by extraction and the accumulation of wealth and power

  5. Adapt to crisis and changing conditions

In addition to these values, we also look to the Solidarity Economy Principles, RIPESS Values, and Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing.
